TRS MPs disrupt LS, RS proceedings over paddy row

TRS MPs raised slogans against Centre\'s policy on paddy procurement and gazette notification on irrigation projects

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) MPs obstructed the first day of winter session of Parliament on Monday demanding that the Centre address the issues of paddy procurement and gazette issued by the Centre taking over irrigation projects on the Krishna and the Godavari.

TRS MPs in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha trooped into the Speaker's and chairman's podiums to press their demands. Later, they staged protests at Mahatma Gandhi statue on Parliament premises demanding the Centre to announce National Farm Produce Policy.

As soon as the Question Hour commenced in the Lok Sabha, the TRS MPs led by party's floor leader Nama Nageswara Rao raised slogans and displayed placards in the podium demanding that the Centre announce its policy on paddy procurement and wanted the paddy lying in the market yards of Telangana lifted immediately.

The repeated requests of Speaker Om Birla to TRS MPs to get back to their seats went in vain. With this, the Speaker adjourned the House till 12 noon.
Meanwhile, in Rajya Sabha, BJP MP G.V.L. Narasimha Rao raised a question on gazette notification issued by the Centre taking control of irrigation projects on the Godavari and the Krishna, and sought to know what action would be taken if any state violated the gazette notification.

While the union jal shakti minister Gajendra Singh Shekawat was asked to reply, the TRS MPs flocked into the podium and started raising slogans against Centre's policy on paddy procurement and gazette notification on irrigation projects.

Rajya Sabha chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu warned them against rushing into the well. He asked TRS parliamentary party leader K. Keshava Rao to control his colleagues. As the MPs did not heed, Venkaiah Naidu adjourned the House till 2 pm.

After both the Houses were adjourned, the TRS MPs staged a dharna at Mahatma Gandhi statue on Parliament premises holding placards and raising slogans on their demands.
