Election Commission's cut-off date hits TDP in Nandyal

The Nandyal Assembly constituency had a total of 2,09,000 voters on January 1, 2017.

KURNOOL: The Election Commission on Friday made it clear that only voters registered before January 1, 2017, were eligible to exercise their franchise in the Nandyal byelection scheduled for August 24.

The development appears to have given a shock to the ruling Telugu Desam as the party had recently got enrolled 15,000 new voters in the constituency.

The Nandyal Assembly constituency had a total of 2,09,000 voters on January 1, 2017.

“With the latest notification from the Election Commission, the TD’s strategy to win the bypoll by creating bogus voters has been foiled,” a YSR Congress spokesperson said.

The YSRC has decided to go through the list of voters ward-wise in the constituency and lodge a complaint with the EC if bogus voters are found, the spokesperson said.

The two parties are treating the bypoll as a matter of prestige, since the result would hardly make any difference to government.
