DMK ally triggers poll alliance speculation

This led to speculation over whether the two parties would come together at all for the coming poll.

Chennai: There was excitement for a while in TN political circles and among the media on Sunday after Dravidian leader Suba Veerapandian, considered close to DMK chief M. Karunanidhi, came down heavily on DMDK. This led to speculation over whether the two parties would come together at all for the coming poll.

He clarified later that he had penned the article in question and posted on his blog on Saturday night only to express his “personal views” and that no political motive should be attributed to the article.

“DMK and DMDK should come together to fight the polls. Both parties have the same goal of defeating the AIADMK Government and hence they should join hands. It will be good for the DMK to come together with DMDK and it will be good for the DMDK to align with DMK,” Mr Veerapandian, convenor of Dravida Iyaka Tamilar Peravai, said.

Incidentally, his clarification came after he met DMK chief M Karunanidhi at his Gopalapuram residence on Sunday morning, where perhaps he was advised to 'clarify' on his attack on DMDK.

The DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin told reporters during his trip to Kolathur on Sunday Mr Veerapandian's views that DMK should contest in 200 seats rather than waiting for the DMDK were his own.

“He is not a member of DMK,” he said when asked to comment on Mr Veerapandian’s views. Between the time that the blog was posted on Saturday night and Mr Veerapandian's ‘clarification’ on Sunday, the media was agog with speculation that since he was close to Mr Karunanidhi, he was only reflecting the DMK chief's mind on the undesirability of having DMDK as an ally. The subsequent ‘clarification’ may have doused all the excitement.

In the article, Mr Veerapandian said the DMK should not wait for a “small party” like DMDK, which has just 5 per cent vote share and take a decision to contest in 200 seats. He also came down heavily on Mr Vijayakanth's style of politics.
