Hyderabad: Union minister for social justice Ramdas Athawale has said that the pending transgender Bill will be passed soon.
“A Bill was mooted in 2016. It is now pending with the Parliamentary Standing Committee. The Centre will pass the Bill soon to give transgenders their rights,” the minister said at an event in the city.
Speaking at the national workshop on ‘Developing Modules for Sensitising Transgender People and Stakeholders’, organised at the National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, he said that reservations and social security were the priority of the government. The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2016, which seeks to prohibit discrimination against transgenders, was introduced in the Lok Sabha last year.
The Bill has been referred to the parliamentary standing committee on social justice and empowerment.
The controversial clause of criminalising beginning has been the main worry of the Hijra community and transgenders who said if the Bill is passed with this clause then it will be used against them.
