MALAPPURAM: The Muslim League, which made a comeback in 2011 after the huge setback in 2006, has again been hit hard in its bastion. There has been a huge erosion of votes in its strongholds in the district. Though it lost only a single seat, the Left wave has brought down the majorities of Muslim League candidates.
Almost all candidates have lost an average of 9,000 votes compared to the last elections. Minister P.K. Abdurabb who remained far behind the LDF independent rival Niyas Pulikkalakath in Tirurangadi during the counting topped the list with a loss of 24,165 votes.
Only P.K. Kunhalikutty and P. Ubaidulla maintained their majorities on par with the last elections. Kunhalikutty lost only 180 votes and retained the Vengara seat with a majority of 38,057 votes. Ubaidulla who has the largest majority in the state won the Malappuram seat with a majority of 35,672 votes, down from 44,508 last time.
Minister Manjalamkuzhi Ali who won with a thin margin of 579 votes this time from Perinthalmanna has lost 9,010 votes. Only P.K Basheer, sitting MLA of Eranad segment, increased the majority from 11,246 to 12,893. C. Mammutty of Tirur, T.A. Ahmed Kabeer of Mankada, T.V. Ibrahim of Kondotty, Abid Husain Tangal of Kottakkal have lost more than 15,000 votes from the previous majorities.
