Siddaramaiah is CLP leader, to lead Congress charge

Party sources said that Mr Siddaramaiah will be the CLP leader on Saturday.

Bengaluru: In a move which left many surprised, the Congress party reposed confidence in former chief minister Siddaramaiah and elected him as the legislature party leader at a meeting held under the leadership of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president, Dr G. Parameshwar at a Hyderabad hotel on Friday.

Before the election of Mr Siddaramaiah, AICC general secretary in charge of Karnataka, K.C. Venugopal consulted national leaders and finally appointed Mr Siddaramaiah as CLP leader.

Party sources said that Mr Siddaramaiah will be the CLP leader on Saturday.“In case the B.S. Yeddyurappa government falls and the JD (S)-Congress coalition comes to power, then the party can elect a new leader. Even though former energy minister D.K. Shivakumar is powerful enough th blunt the charge of the ruling BJP, since Mr Siddaramaiah has legal knowledge being a lawyer, he can take on the government more effectively. So he has been appointed CLP leader,” sources in the party said.

KPCC president Dr G. Parameshwar is tipped to become Deputy CM in the JD(S)-Congress coalition government headed by H.D. Kumaraswamy if the BJP government led by B.S. Yeddyurappa falls.
