New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday met senior party leaders amid speculation about major changes in the organisation and the role of Priyanka Gandhi and former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.
The AICC was tightlipped on whether Ms Dikshit would be its “face” in UP ahead of the elections, either as CM candidate or campaign chief, or would be AICC general secretary in charge of Punjab.
“Sheilaji can’t get a role in UP and Punjab simultaneously. But she can be utillised as she’s a good governance brand,” a source said. Mrs Gandhi met Ms Dikshit, Kamal Nath, Mukul Wasnik and Anand Sharma separately on Thursday.
Jairam Ramesh’s name is, meanwhile, doing the rounds as AICC communications department chief.
Mrs Gandhi is under intense pressure to utilise daughter Priyanka more as the party is losing state after state. Ghulam Nabi Azad and Amarinder Singh, among others, are pushing for her to campaign extensively in UP and Punjab. Insiders claim election strategist Prashant Kishor is behind the move to project Sheila Dikshit.
