Kerala: RSP(L) rules out merger with NCP

The four-time Kunnathur MLA said that a decision on giving cabinet berth to RSP(L) has to be taken by the LDF state leadership.

Thiruvananthapuram: In the wake of serious differences within his party RSP(L), Kovoor Kunjumon, MLA, on Tuesday said there was no question of accepting ministership through NCP quota. He also ruled out RSP(L) merger with NCP. “We are a Left party and there is nothing common in our policies as far as NCP is concerned,” he told mediapersons.

The four-time Kunnathur MLA said that a decision on giving cabinet berth to RSP(L) has to be taken by the LDF state leadership.

The move to consider Kunjumon for cabinet berth had led to internal strife in the NCP. While a section close to Thomas Chandy had favoured the formula in the wake of pressure mounting from CPM to fill the vacant Cabinet slot, the proposal to have an outsider was opposed by A K Saseendran MLA.

NCP state president N Peethambaran Master said the party had not invited anyone from outside to become a minister. The issue had also led to sharp differences within RSP(L) with a section of leaders seeking LDF's intervention to prevent Kunjumon from becoming a minister.

The NCP leadership has now made it clear that there is no question of inducting MLAs of other parties to fill the party’s slot. “We will wait till our MLAs are cleared of charges,” said Peethambaran Master.

Meanwhile a section of NCP leaders accused Peethambaran master of holding unilateral discussions with Kerala Congress (B) of R Balakrishna Pillai and RSP(L).

They said the differences within the party had reached a flash point and some leaders had even demanded Peethambaran Master's resignation.

Reacting to the criticism against him, Peethambaran Master said he was ready to step down any moment.
