M Karunanidhi's remarks on Gangajal draw flak

Karunanidhi, who had no courage to oppose it as an anti-secular act, is speaking against sale of Gangajal.

Chennai: DMK chief M. Karunanidhi's opposition to the sale of gangajal in post offices triggered stiff opposition from the BJP and other Hindu outfits, who flayed the DMK as an ‘anti-Hindu party’.

Commenting on the sale of Gangajal, Karunanidhi on Friday said, “No one can degrade the term ‘secular government’ mentioned in the preface of the Indian Constitution.” He also asked if the Centre would soon sell sacred ash (thiruneeru) and sindhu (kungumam) in post offices.

Reacting to the comment, BJP national secretary H. Raja said several kilos of rice is being sent to mosques to celebrate Ramzan. Karunanidhi, who had no courage to oppose it as an anti-secular act, is speaking against sale of Gangajal, he said. Karunanidhi’s speech did not show the DMK as a party with 90 per cent Hindus, the BJP leader said alluding to the remarks of M.K. Stalin, who had stated that 90 per cent of the DMK members are Hindus.
