Hyderabad: Polls for MPP, Zilla Parishad chiefs after July 5

The tenure of the municipalities in the state would end in July.

Hyderabad: The State Election Commission on Wednesday announced that the Zilla Parishad chairpersons and Mandal Praja Parishat (MPP) presidents would be elected after July 5. State Election Commissioner V. Nagi Reddy said that barring erstwhile Khammam district, the tenure of the ZP chairperson and MPP president would end on July 4 and hence they would be elected after July 5.

Mr Reddy said that the exercise for the elections will begin from June. He said that the state government should take up the delimitation of wards. Mr Reddy said that voter verification would be done after the delimitation. The tenure of the municipalities in the state would end in July.

Mr Reddy said that as many as 1,20,86,385 of the total 1,56,02,845 voters exercised their franchise in the polls to the two upper tiers of the local bodies. “A total of 77.46 per cent of voters turned up for the elections,” he said. The highest poll percentage was recorded in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district with 87.02 per cent and the lowest was in Vikarabad district at 70.4 per cent, he said.

Te said that in the last month, the commission had released the election schedule for 5,817 MPTCs and 538 ZPTCs. He said unanimous elections had taken place for 158 MPTCs and four ZPTCs and a total of 2,426 candidates for ZPTCs and 18,930 for MPTCs had contested.

He said elections were held through ballot papers and counting would be held on May 27 at 123 counting centres. Mr Reddy said after the ZPTC and MPTC polls, Mandal Praja Parishad and Zilla Praja Parishad members would be elected after July 5.
