Hyderabad: Candidates get high on booze, money

On Wednesday, officials raided a Congress leader's house at Warangal and seized about Rs 2 crore.

Hyderabad: With just a day left for polling, political parties face a crucial time in which they have to distribute money and liquor to voters. Their future may well be determined in these 24 hours till the elections on Friday.

So far officials have seized Rs 129.46 crore worth liquor, gold and silver apart from cash. The candidates have started door-to-door campaign, during which some of them secretly distributed money and liquor.

On Wednesday, officials raided a Congress leader’s house at Warangal and seized about Rs 2 crore. Some candidates are taking account numbers of voters and transferring money.

Some candidates in Karimnagar district have tied up with petrol bunks and distributing coupons to voters for free 10-15 litres of free petrol. In the capital, a candidate distributed sewing machines to some families. Political workers are complaining to officials about other parties. In Balanagar, TRS workers complained that TD activists were distributing money from a theatre. Police raided the theatre and seized '8 lakh.

The election will see several very rich candidates: Munugodu Congress candidate Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy tops the list with declared assets of Rs 314 crore. In Nizamabad district, BSP candidate M. Sunil Kumar from Balkonda valued his assets at Rs 182 crore.

There are about 25 candidates who have more than Rs 100 crore assets, among them contractors, realtors, businessmen and industrialists.
