Simultaneous polls will be best, says Governor Narasimhan

Mr Narasimhan supported the suggestion by the PM on conducting elections for Lok Sabha along with State Assemblies once in five years.

Hyderabad: Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan on Wednesday suggested to Election Authorities across the country to conduct simultaneous polls for local bodies along with Lok Sabha and Assembly elections to lessen the burden of holding different elections at different times.

He also advocated a single voters’ list that could be followed for all elections instead of preparing separate lists for different elections.

Addressing the 24th All-India State Election Commissioners Annual Conference here, Mr Narasimhan supported the suggestion by the PM on conducting elections for Lok Sabha along with State Assemblies once in five years.

The Governor said it was highly desirable to have minimum education qualification for all contestants. To overcome problems in conducting the polls for various institutions at various times, the Election Commissioners should come out with more suggestions and ideas on using up-to date technology thus minimising the problems being faced by the authorities, he said.

Mr Narasimhan also suggested bringing in legislation empowering the election authority to recall the public representatives who fail to deliver.

Election Commissioner of India A.K. Joti, who participated in the meeting, explained the various initiatives taken by poll panel in using latest technology in conducting elections.
