Coimbatore: Launching a frontal attack on the opposition DMK, the Chief Minister and AIADMK leader, J Jayalalithaa on Sunday charged that the DMK chief M.Karunanidhi would fulfill the poll promises that benefit his family.
“In 2006, the DMK gave television sets worth Rs 2,000, but collected Rs 3,000 for cable connection from each household. By this, the DMK leaders have earned Rs 25,000 crore of income. The DMK may give promises to gain power, but it will implement the promises only if Karunanidhi or his family gets benefitted,” she charged, while addressing a massive election meeting at Codissia Grounds in Coimbatore.
Dubbing the Congress- DMK combine an alliance of corruption, Jayalalithaa said, “why should DMK align with Congress after blaming the Congress of taking revenge on it for the 2G scam, which caused the exchequer a loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore. Why should Congress take revenge? Does that mean the Congress did not get its due share from the DMK?” she queried, while appealing to the people to drive them away when they come seeking votes.
Listing out the corrupt deeds of the Congress and DMK, AIADMK supremo J. Jayalalithaa said that the DMK and Congress could only give corrupt governance in the state and at the Centre.
Countering the charges by opposition parties on the industrial growth in the state, J. Jayalalithaa taunted: “Kalaingar may be referring to the lack of industrial growth in his own family. Tamil Nadu has emerged as second only to Maharashtra in having most number of industrial units, first in number of workers, third in exports. The state is also in the forefront in attracting foreign direct investments.”
The Global investors meet has attracted Rs 2,42,160 crore of investments and MoUs were signed with about 45 firms. “Tamil Nadu, which was facing power cuts for up to 10 long hours, has been made a power surplus state in the last five years. After AIADMK assumed power, new schemes were implemented and power was purchased to become a power surplus state,” she said.
“If the DMK comes seeking votes, ask them, should we vote for you to suffer again from power cuts?”
The AIADMK leader solicited votes for the party candidates in Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Tirupur districts. On the Athikadavu water supply scheme, which is a key demand of the farmers in the region, Jayalalithaa assured that the project would be implemented when the AIADMK returns to power. The government has already given a sanction for hiring a consultancy firm at a cost of Rs 3. 27 crore.
On the May Day, the Chief Minister chose to reach out to the labourers, pointing out that her regime had set up a welfare board for the unorganised transport workers.
