Khammam: Voters can be booked for violating RP Act

People cannot restrict candidates from campaigning.

Khammam: The Representation of Peoples Act and model code of conduct (MCC) pertain not only to candidates contesting from various political parties but also to people.

People can be booked for violation of the RP Act. What are these violations form the theme of a big discussion among voters.

Some ruling party candidates are facing a tough time from people and are being grilled and being found fault with for not fulfilling their election promises and not solving problems in their respective villages.

Aswaraopet TRS candidate Thati Venkateswarlu is first in this list and is facing several protests from many villages.

He has had a bitter experience at the hands of the people of Mallaigudem, Peraigudem and Nallabadu in Aswaraopet mandal in Bhadradri-Kothagudem district. Voters, who faulted his failures in fulfilling his election assurances, did not allow him to campaign. He had to return without campaigning.

Here, the RP Act violation will be applied. People have a right to ask and grill the candidates for not fulfilling their election promises but cannot restrict any candidate’s campaign.

No political party or group of people can restrict the candidate from campaigning. People who obstruct the campaign and meetings of candidates, will be booked under Section 127 of the RP Act.

The issue was raised when minister for roads and buildings Tummala Nageswara Rao faced a situation in Appalanarasimhapuram village in Nelakondapalli and Nelapatla in Kusumanchi mandal in Palair assembly segment. Some people argued with him for not implementing the three acre land scheme to dalits and 2BHK housing for poor sections.

In Mahajidpuram in Tirumalayapalem mandal, locals displayed a banner that they would not allow any party candidate into their village as they were vexed with the promises made by political parties. Police and election officials are trying to make voters aware of the law.
