Protesters against development: Pon Radhakrishnan

Chennai: Union minister of state for finance and shipping Pon Radhakrishnan has claimed that people opposing developmental projects are those against the progress of Tamil Nadu and against the well-being of Tamils.

Lashing out at the political parties and organisations opposing various projects including the Chennai-Salem green expressway corridor, the minister said certain forces that were working against the interest of Tamil Nadu have launched a ‘campaign to destroy the state.’ According to him, here were many organisations that are out to ‘systematically destroy’ the state by targetting the officials and public. “They had diverted the attention of the fishermen protesting against Sterlite’s copper smelter plant in Thoothukudi and drove them to the situation warranting police firing. If stern action is not taken on such elements, then Thoothukudi-like situation will prevail in other parts,” Mr Radhakrishnan warned. Speaking to reporters in Thuckalay in Kanyakumari district on Saturday he reiterated the presence of terrorists and naxalites in Tamil Nadu and sought to know why the Dravidian parties are silent on their presence in the state.

“The DMK is not prepared to play the constructive role of an opposition party by finding the State government's faults. The easiest way of protest for them is to stage a walkout from the TN Assembly,” Mr Radhakrishnan said flaying the DMK.
