Chennai: The State had wrested the rankings from neighbouring Kerala and Karnataka to occupy the third spot in human trafficking. A total of 577 cases were registered in TN in which as many 803 persons were trafficked in 2015.
The State saw 590 being persons trafficked in 509 cases in 2014. India recorded a total of 6,877 trafficking cases in which 9,127 persons were trafficked.
Assam tops the chart with 1,516 being trafficked in 1,494 cases followed by Bengal which recorded 1,474 persons in 1,255 cases. Kerala had as many as 1,326 persons being trafficked in 155 cases and ranked first in 2014 and it recorded as many as 715 persons being trafficked in 151 cases in 2015.
Karnataka which recorded as many as 834 persons being trafficked in 472 cases in 2014 was pushed to the fourth spot in 2015 with 747 being trafficked in 507 cases.
Crimes against women have decreased
Crimes against women came down in Tamil Nadu in 2015 compared to the previous year, a trend also witnessed nationwide. From a total of 6,325 cases reported in 2014, the number of cases against women in 2015 came to 5,847.
Similarly across the nation, the number of cases decreased from 3,21,993 to 3,09,549. Uttar Pradesh reported 35,527 cases, the - highest in the country.
In TN, the number of rape cases came down from 459 to 421, while Madhya Pradesh reported 4,391 cases – the highest number of rape cases in any state last year followed by Rajastan with 3,644 cases.
The number of kidnapping and abduction of women cases came down in TN from 1,502 to 1,335 in 2015. However kidnapping and abduction of women for marriage has gone from 1,080 in 2014 to 1,104 last year.
Assaults on women with intention to outrage their modesty went up in TN from 1,102 to 1,163, while Maharashtra reported 11,713 such cases in 2015. Similarly, the number of sexual harassment cases too went up from 46 to 197. The cases of cruelty by husbands came down from 2,103 to 1,900 last year compared to 2014.
