Palmolein scam trial shifted to June 23

The trial is being conducted in the court as per the order of the Supreme Court.

Thrissur: The Special Vigilance Court on here on Monday postponed the trial in the Palmolein scam case till June 23. While issuing the order the court focused on speedy conduct of the trial. The trial is being conducted in the court as per the order of the Supreme Court.

The Vigilance Court Judge C. Jayachandran insisted that the accused should be present on June 23. The Supreme Court had ordered earlier this month for a speedy trial on the appeal by V.S. Achuthanandan who argued that the case had been delaying unnecessarily.

Former Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson and P. J Thomson, former Secretary of Civil Supplies are among the accused in the case. If there is evidence found against former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy during the trial, he could be made an accused. He is at present a witness in the case.

The case pertains to the import of 15,000 tonnes of palm oil by K Karunakaran led government in 1991-92 . The deal allegedly caused an estimated loss of over '2.30 crore for the state exchequer.
