Chennai: Thousands of government staff deployed for May 16 election duty are yet to get their poll duty salaries from the government. With both election department and collectorates delaying related file, government staff are agitated over the inordinate delay. According to informed sources the salaries to an estimate up to Rs 58 crore were to be paid to the government staff deployed on poll duty.
These staff were deployed as presiding officers, booth level officers and those in charge of counting stations and election logistics. Most of them are government schoolteachers, who are yet to get their remuneration.
When contacted, chief electoral officer Rajesh Lakhoni said that the majority of those on poll duty had been paid their dues. There are a few pending cases and officials have been instructed to clear the necessary files. District collectors are also aware of the situation and will address the issues soon.
