Landless families stage protest in Thrissur

420 families are landless in Ayyanthole Village limit alone, where Thrissur collectorate is located.

Thrissur: Over 100 landless families, who were included in the list of those eligible for the ‘Zero Landless Scheme’ of the previous UDF government, protested in front of Thrissur collectorate on Monday demanding immediate allocation of the land. The functionaries of the samara samiti said that in Ayyanthole Village limit, where the collectorate is located, there are 420 families who were included in the scheme. But they have not been given land.

“In the state, a total of 2.5 lakh persons were made part of the scheme, but only 35,000 were handed over proper title deeds. In the district, there were 32,000 eligible families under the scheme, but only 1,500 were given title deeds,” Mr K.K. Shajahan of the Welfare Party, which came out in support of the samiti, told DC.

He said that along with the settlers in the high ranges in the district, who were in possession of the land, title deeds were distributed to a few eligible families from the ‘Zero Landless Scheme’ by organising a mega ‘pattaya mela’ at the Town Hall in Thrissur. The event was held a few days before the election code of conduct came into effect for the last Assembly elections.

“Now, we have come across nearly 15 persons who were given title deeds but are running from one revenue department office to another as they could not yet find the land allotted to them as per the deed. When we took up the matter with the revenue officials, they said that as the ‘melas’ were organised in haste, there were a few lapses,” he added.
