Hyderabad: Forced to marry, girl hangs herself

Engagement was to be held on October 1.

Hyderabad: Depressed over pressure from her parents to tie the nuptial knot, a 23-year-old MTech graduate committed suicide in Rajendranagar, just three days before her engagement.

The police said Gandham Pujitha hanged herself at her house when the family members were away. Pujitha, a resident of Attapur, had completed the MTech last year. Her father, G. Prabhakar, works in the health department in the city.

Pujitha’s marriage was fixed a few days ago and the engagement was slated for October 1 and the wedding on November 24. Her parents were shopping for the engagement on Wednesday.

They went out at around 11 am, leaving Pujitha alone. When they returned at night, they found the flat locked from the inside. They broke open the door and found Pujitha hanging from a ceiling fan with the help of a sari. Though they rushed her to a hospital, she was declared brought dead.

The police said that the family members are clueless about the reason behind the suicide. They said that she might have ended her life due to her unwillingness to get married.

“The reason is not clear. She did not leave any suicide note. Her mobile phone is being verified for any clues,” said N. Mallikarjun, SI, Rajendranagar police station. Pujitha’s body was handed over to the family after post-mortem.
