Chennai: One killed, 8 hurt as bus runs amok

Driver, conductor of govt bus run away.

Chennai: One person on a push cart with three wheels died and 8 passengers injured when a government bus plying between Puducherry and Chennai ran out of control early on Sunday morning on the ECR near Kaanathur in Chennai.

Police identified the deceased as Armugham (43), a scrap handler, who had been pushing his cart on the roadside at around 4.30 am on ECR.

A native of Villupuram, Armugham died on the spot after the bus hit him. His body was shifted to government hospital for post mortem. The bus stopped only after hitting a roadside wall and in the process 8 passengers in the bus were injured.

They were taken to Royapettah general hospital. Fearing mob fury, the driver and conductor escaped from the scene immediately after the accident. It is possible that the driver dozed off which resulted in the fatal accident. The mishap also caused traffic snarl on ECR for more than 30 minutes.
