Kochi: Heavy rains, traffic jams compound wet miseries

Eastern parts of the district received heavy rain fall from early Monday morning

KOCHI: Normal life was thrown out of gear as moderate to heavy rains and strong winds lashed city and outskirts on Tuesday. Traffic was disrupted in many areas, especially along the Metro Rail construction sites. Office goers and students had a tough time reaching their destinations.

Many city areas like Ernakulam North, Town Hall Road, High Court junction, Veekshanam Road, Canon shed Road, Convent Road, railway station and KSRTC bus stand premises, Kadavanthra, Vyttila, Azad Road in Kaloor and Kalathiparamb Cross Road were flooded in heavy downpour. As drains are damaged along the Metro corridor, water entered the shops and houses. Traffic along the Vyttila-Pettah stretch was the worst affected where road widening works are on.

"Due to poor condition of the road and the ongoing widening and drain construction works, travelling along the stretch has become a risky affair. Deep potholes have made two-wheeler very risky. Instances of bike riders skidding and falling are common," said V.P. Chandran, division councillor.

Corporation welfare committee chairman A.B. Sabu who represents the area told DC that during a recent meeting, PWD and KMRL officials were urged to carry out emergency repairing works. As per MET Department data, Ernakulam South received a rainfall of 1.5 cm, while Kochi Naval Base received 1.8 cm rainfall. Perumbavoor received the highest amount of rain of 7.5 cm. CIAL received 5 cm of rain.
