Film buffs sub-title classics in Malayalam

8 professionals behind project

KOZHIKODE: They are a group of film buffs in Kannur with a passion to see world classics and also screen them for the benefit of the general public. But to make the people easily understand the films, they also sub-title them in Malayalam. With encouraging response from the viewers, the group of eight people has so far sub-titled over 100 world classics.

The group, which formed the 'Open Frame Film Society Payyanur' in 2005 to watch diverse movies, has organised a five-day Marathi film festival in Kannur. The films include Court, Elizabeth Ekadasi, Fandry (Pig), Killa (Cave) and Valu (Wild Bull), which have been sub-titled in Malayalam.

P. Premachandran, a member of the film society, said, "though the society was formed in 2005, it was three years back we came up with the idea of translating the best movies from various languages and started showing them to the public."
"Due to the strong public demand, we started translating more such films and altogether we have sub-titled nearly 100 world classics," he added.

"The members, including K. Ramachandran, R. Nandalal and Prasanth, work in diverse professions and we do the sub-titling during our free time," Mr Premachandran, a government higher secondary school teacher at Payyanur, said. "We watch a movie carefully to understand the meaning and also go for the English sub-titles. Later, we translate them into Malayalam," Mr Premachandran said.
