Panel launches drive to save Vizhinjam marine economy

Port would have its impact only if an ambience were built up for the purpose.

Thiruvananthapuram: The campaign committee for the capital city (CC4CC) has come up with a campaign for ensuring marine economy after the establishment of the Vizhinjam international deepwater multi-purpose seaport. For, this cargo has to be generated in the neighbourhood. It claims the seaport would not bring prosperity to the state. Port would have its impact only if an ambience were built up for the purpose.

S. Mohan Kumar, the programme coordinator of CC4CC, said a lot of political interventions were needed for making the port-based economy a reality. Public opinion has to be created for this. As part of this, a 500-day campaign named Vizhinjam countdown started on April 18, coinciding with the completion of 500 days of its construction. This campaign was inaugurated by fisheries and cashew minister J. Mercykutty Amma by planting a cashew sapling in her official residence.

Cashew is a symbol of cargo that can be generated in the neighbourhood of the port, Mr Kumar said. Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani had announced when the signing of the concession agreement on August 17, 2015, that they would strive to commission the multi-purpose seaport in a record time of 1,000 days after beginning construction on November 1, 2015. The decision was to plant one sapling each day as part of the countdown.
