Colleges set to add extra medical seats

To that effect, the health department has sent a circular to private colleges to extend the date of counselling while more seats are being added.

Hyderabad: A total of 190 additional medical seats are to be added according to the circular issued by the board of governors of the Medical Council of India to the Telangana state health department, thereby making them extend the date of application to June 28. Private medical colleges, too, will be able to opt for 100 more seats provided they have the capacity to accommodate economically weaker sections.

To that effect, the health department has sent a circular to private colleges to extend the date of counselling while more seats are being added.

Dr Ramesh Reddy, the director in-charge of health and medical education, explained, “This is a provincial increase, based on the capacity of private medical colleges. The circular has been issued by the board, and we have forwarded the same to all private medical colleges. It is now upon them to take the additional seats.”

Counselling is underway in the nine government colleges in the state all of which are opting for additional seats in the EWS category of 10 per cent reservation. The total number of medical seats per college cannot exceed 250. Since OGH already has 250 seats, it has not been allotted additional seats. The other eight government colleges whose capacities vary from 150 to 200 seats have been allotted additional seats based on their capacity. Do government colleges have the capacity to accommodate more candidates, though? “400 more teachers will be joining us before the year begins, so there won’t be a shortage of teachers,” Dr Reddy explained.
