25 Manuu students barred from hostels

Seven students have also been told to pay a penalty of Rs 5,000.

Hyderabad: Twenty-five students of Maulana Azad National Urdu University, who had been served showcause notices in June, have been debarred from taking admission into hostels till they finish their courses as part of the university’s disciplinary action. They have been ordered to give an undertaking that they would get involved in any act of indiscipline. Seven students have also been told to pay a penalty of Rs 5,000.

The 25 students were issued notices after they protested on May 13 and 14 against the university's order to students to vacate their hostel rooms after the end of the semester. The university started hostel allotments on a yearly basis. The university stated that if the students did not not vacate the rooms, the locks would be broken and belongings be cleared. This triggered protests.

Students against whom action was taken, said they had been targeted. A student said, “There were hundreds of students who participated in the protests. The then students union conducted the protests, but none of them was booked.” Manuu proctor Prof. Mohammed Abdul Azeem said, “The punishments are lenient keeping their careers in view. As per rules, the students should have been debarred from the university. One night they closed the main gate and forced many staff members to stay back till 3 am the next day. Photographic proof and evidence from security personnel are available regarding involvement of the 25 students.”
