Sobha Yatra lands in trouble

CPM dropped its plans but Balagokulam went ahead, saying that it was an age-old custom.

Kozhikode: The police registered a case against Balagokulam in Kuttiady, Kozhikode, late Wednesday night for conducting Shobha Yatra processions violating its orders. They were directed not to take out any processions anticipating violence. The CPM workers had alleged police favouritism to Balagokulam against their Balasangham. Kuttiady SI K. Sayooj Kumar said both Balasangham and Balagokulam had submitted requests and both were rejected.

“It is baseless to say that the police permitted only one team. On August 18, I sent a report to the district collector regarding the sensitivity of the issue and on August 24, the Balagokulam took out processions saying it was an age-old tradition they keep alive,” the SI said. The police added that they did not stop it on the spot since there were women and children in the rally and it would have resulted in a disturbance in the area. Cases were registered under unlawful assembly, knowing it has been commanded to disperse.
