Malappuram civic bodies: Congress, Muslim League reconcile locally

The district committees of both parties are steering a reconciliation at the local level for a smooth change of guard in seven panchayats

MALAPPURAM: While the UDF in the state remains in doldrums, the main constituents of the front, the Congress and Muslim League district committees in Malappuram are advancing with a mission to reclaim lost ground in civic bodies. The district committees of both parties have been steering the reconciliation move at the local level for a smooth change of guard in at least seven panchayats. The UDF’s plan is to first reach an agreement on locally motivated disputes which will be supervised by the district committees, said DCC president Mr E. Muhammed Kunhi.

“The process will take a couple of months. District committees of both parties have decided to reconstitute the UDF locally and we are helping each other,” he said. Once the issues are settled down, the No Confidence Motion route will be the next step. The move has proved a success in Karulayi panchayat recently where the eight-member LDF council has been ousted by the reunited UDF recently. The UDF has 11 members in the 19-member Panchayat council.

However, both the Congress and League had been at loggerheads due to indifferences which paved the way for the LDF to come to power. Serious reconciliation efforts have been underway in Chokkad, Edapatta, Vazhakkad, Marakkara and Ozhur Panchayats and Kondotty municipality. All these civic bodies are governed by Jana-keeya Vikasana Munnani, a concoction led by either CPM-Muslim Lea-gue Front or CPM-Cong-ress front.

The Congress and Muslim League had fought each other in 24 civic bodies. “The Muslim League and Congress in the district have decided to shun all the parliamentary relations with parties outside the UDF. Such relations will not be tolerated once the reconciliation processes are completed,” said K.N.A Khader, district general secretary of Muslim League.
