Approach roads to Partha temple to get facelift

Chennai corporation targets VVIP convoy routes, extends road beautification project.

Chennai: Over the next three months, a stretch of Marina beach, approach roads leading to historic Triplicane Parthasarthy Temple and Queen Mary’s College road will wear a decorative aesthetic look with Greater Chennai corporation extending the ongoing road landscape project. New bus bay, iron railings and granite footpaths are to come up all along these stretches, which are part of the city VVIP convoy routes.

The corporation top brass has instructed the local contractors to speed up the beautification projects and complete the work by October. Two causeways had also been identified in the area and their walls are to be razed down to pave way for new structures and if required, these new structures will be given an artistic painting, corporation sources said. To prevent cattle in Triplicane straying on to arterial Kamarajar Salai (Beach road), cattle catcher structures, are also laid in the roads, but some of them intelligently walk over the structure without getting their legs trapped, sources added.

“Most of the beautification projects and landscape had always been executed on the Marina beach side ignoring the adjacent good old Triplicane and now the historical area is getting its due”, said K. Balakrishnan, a resident of Triplicane Big Street. Encroachment is the major issue in Triplicane and Royapettah. The government should do some thing about it, he added.

“The shops located in front of Triplicane temple are soon to be relocated to the rear side of temple, so that the temple premises is restored to its ancient look. The interior roads in Triplicane are now receiving a facelift and the works will be completed ahead of monsoon, said local councilor P. Sreenivasan.

The approach road leading to Triplicane MRTS railway station will also get a facelift and the corporation recently constructed a foot over bridge in the area. Bus bays with granite footpaths near Vivekanandar Illam will be completed by next month, the councillor said.
