Kozhikode district jail launches share meal' plan

Scheme aims to help anyone hungry'

KOZHIKODE: Next time when you buy a food packet from the District Jail, buy an additional cash coupon and stick it on a board adjacent to the counter. The jail has launched a ‘share meal’ scheme where anyone can buy an additional food coupon for those with empty pockets. DIG (prisons) north zone Sam Thankayan launched the scheme on Monday at a function presided over by Kerala Union of Working Journalists president Kamal Varadoor.

“The scheme is a brainchild of jail superintendent Anil Kumar, who had launched it in Ernakulam while working there,” jail welfare officer Rajesh Kumar T. said. "All others agreed, as it is a novel initiative aimed at a city without hunger." A share meal coupon provides five chapattis and a curry. Anyone who does not have money and is hungry can pick up one from the counter. "None will question their identity or background as we need everyone to get food without questions asked," he said. The jail authorities are now thinking of supplying coupons to needy patients at the government hospitals and charities if they get more.
