Kottayam: Police on Tuesday said they had found fake 1,000-denomination banknotes of Rs 2.58 lakh abandoned near a waste pile on a roadside at Kuttikkanam near Peermade. Idukki special branch DySP V.N. Saji said an unidentified person passed the information through a text message Monday night and the police who reached the spot in the morning found the counterfeit currencies near the Valanjanganam waterfalls on the Kottayam-Kumily Road.

"All of the notes were fake but of high-quality printing making it difficult to differentiate from the original. Most of them have the same serial numbers," he told DC. "We have registered a case, and started an investigation. We received no clue to their source."
