Malappuram: Row over call for social boycott

The council issued the boycott call as a punishment for conducting inter-religious marriage.

MALAPPURAM: A social boycott allegedly issued by the local Muslim council (Mahallu committee under the mosque) of Kondiparambu in Keezhattur against the family of a local CPM leader has stirred up a controversy in Malappuram. The council issued the boycott call as a punishment for conducting inter-religious marriage. The Madarul Islam Sangham, the Mahallu committee, urged the residents of the area not to co-operate with the family of Kunnummal Yusuf, an assistant executive engineer with Kerala Water Authority, after he agreed to marry off his daughter Jaseela to a non-Muslim youth. Yusuf's wife, Najma Yusuf, is a member of the CPM's Manjeri area committee.

The marriage between 26-year-old Jaseela, member of the DYFI Manjeri block committee, and Tiso Thomas was held on Friday as per the Special Marriages Act. The family also organised a reception as part of the wedding on Saturday. "We have no issue with the Mahallu committee. We came to know about the boycott call through friends and social media. We haven't got any official communication from the committee regarding this. We will approach the court if we receive the same," Ms Najma Yusuf told DC.

The circular addressed to the local Muslim residents asks them not to co-operate with the Yusufs neither in mosque-related affairs nor for any other social function. It is to be noted that Mr Yusuf's father was an officer bearer of the mahallu committee.
