Construction work blamed for waterlogging at Kaveri Hills

The stagnant water at Doctor's colony road, which connects Jubilee Hills to Inorbit Mall and Biodiversity, causes traffic jams.

Hyderabad: Roads and houses in Kaveri Hills Phases 1 and 2 at Madhapur were heavily waterlogged during the recent rains and locals are blaming the upcoming construction projects for blocking the natural flow of water and the drain.

The rainwater ideally should have flowed through a nala into the Durgam Cheruvu, but an illegal wall built by Doctor’s colony, and around 30-40 houses, have reduced the width of the nala from four metres to one metre, causing the entire area to be flooded.

“The situation wasn’t like this until July when the construction began. The water has stagnated in the area,” says Dileep K. Bivanapalli.

The stagnant water at Doctor’s colony road, which connects Jubilee Hills to Inorbit Mall and Biodiversity, causes traffic jams. The slope of the road on the hilly terrain causes a strong current, which is particularly dangerous for two-wheelers.

“We had a Benz and an auto carrier marooned for hours after Sunday’s rain,” adds Mr Bivanapalli. “It’s a nightmare to drive on this road as the waterlogging which stretches for about 700-800 metres catches one unawares. We can’t take a U-turn and have to wade through the water no matter what,” says Shashank Shekhar, a commuter.

Doctor’s colony has added to the woes of its neighbours by building a concrete wall blocking the water flow coming from Ayyapa Society and Madhapur.

Bandlaguda records highest rainfall

Rain drenched southern and eastern parts of the city for an hour on Sunday.
The Indian Meteorological Department had issued a thunderstorm warning for the state due to a depression that has formed over the Bay of Bengal.

Bandlaguda recorded the highest rainfall of 3.4 cm. With the rainwater collecting on the roads, traffic flow was affected at Secunderabad, Tarnaka, LB Nagar, Uppal, Nagole Kukatpally, Lingampally and Ramachandrapuram.

A report said a car washed away into a nala at Alkapuri crossroads. People took to Twitter to express their anguish at the poor infrastructure. “Traffic jams again. Took 90 minutes from Nagole to Uppal X road. All hopes on Metro,” said Twitter user Vamshi Lingala.

Rain was reported from Punjagutta, Banjara Hills, Nampally, Madhapur, Mehdipatnam, Secunderabad, Kushaiguda, Dilsukhnagar, BN Reddy Nagar, Hayatnagar, Abdullapurmet, LB Nagar, Vanasthalipuram, Nagole, Musheerabad, Narayanguda and Tank Bund.
