Chennai: Tipper lorry crushes biker, triggers anger

Irked locals block road.

Chennai: A fatal accident involving a tipper lorry and a two-wheeler, in which a 45-year-old–man was killed, led to flash road roko by passersby and the locals, for about an hour, on Kakkan Nagar Main Road, Adambakkam, on Saturday.

The cops brokered peace so that the body could be removed from the accident spot and traffic was disrupted for about an hour later. The deceased is identified as V. Mohan (45), a resident of Pallikaranai, who worked as an electrician in Kakkan Nagar.

While riding along Kakkan Nagar Main Road at around 10 am, the tipper lorry dashed the biker down. It also ran him over before it came to a halt. The biker died on the spot.

Since the other road users raised an alarm, the apparently scared lorry driver fled the scene with the lorry fearing mob justice. Subsequently, the witnesses and other road users resorted to a road roko demanding immediate arrest of the lorry driver.

The protesters claimed that Saturday fatality was the fourth one in the past five months. They blamed the metro water for shrinking the carriageway by
leaving the huge pipes on the roadsides for months together.

The Chennai Corporation also drew the ire of the protesters who claimed
that the poor road conditions had been a perennial woe in the section connecting Kakkan Nagar and NGO Colony in Adambakkam.

In the meantime, the lorry driver, identified as Ravishaker, (32), of Tirisulam, turned himself to Mount traffic investigation wing and was arrested on charges of rash and negligent driving.
