Gurudin promises free trade'

Lapses rectified, says commissioner in context of hartal violence at SM Street.

Kozhikode: City police commissioner K. Sanjay Kumar Gurudin has assured the trading community that alls steps would be taken to ensure safe and smooth trade ambience in the city. Mr Gurudin was addressing an interactive session with traders organised by the district committee of Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti (KVVES) here in the wake of the recent violence unleashed by miscreants during a hartal day at SM Street. “The lapses have been rectified which will not recur”, he said.

He also promised to take steps to ease the traffic snarls in the city. “Ideal slots should be found in the city itself for vehicle parking,” he said.

“Every slot should have parking facility for at least 10 vehicles. A committee comprising police, traders, political party leaders, corporation representatives and residents’ associations should be formed for the purpose. These slots should be found this week itself,” said Mr Gurudin.

He said zebra linings and stop points should be marked at various places in the city. All regulations would be implemented after preliminary tests, he said and promised measures to avoid issues at SM Street in future.

The merchants demanded withdrawal of the ban on vehicle entry on the street. They also urged deployment of more cops at Mankavu junction, especially on Sundays when there is heavy traffic.

The commissioner said that he would visit the areas having parking and traffic woes within 10 days.

As many as 15 complaints were submitted to the commissioner at the function.
