Chennai: Laser beam Perpetrator gets 7-day jail

Chennai: Nearly 15 months after a person was arrested on charge of projecting laser beam light from his apartment in Vepery, the II Metropolitan Magistrate, Egmore at Allikulam has convicted him and sentenced him to undergo imprisonment for a week. His act caused shock wave among the personnel at the lighthouse.

According to prosecution on August 31, 2016 at above 9.15 pm, when Rajakumar, SI, G-1 Vepery police station, was walking on E.V.K Sampath road, he found laser beam light projected by using a machine.

Staff at the lighthouse reportedly alerted the police. On investigation, the Vepery police found that Edwin had fixed Sabari laser beam light Vimala Cell at an apartment.

On a complaint from Rajkumar, Vepery police station registered case against Edwin for committing offence under sections 287 (negligent conduct with respect to machinery) and 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of IPC.

Immediately, he was arrested and release on bail from the police station. The cops seized the machine emitting laser beam light. Initially, Edwin submitted that he was innocent. On conclusion of trial, the II Metropolitan Magistrate, B. Santhosh, said when the accused was questioned in the court, he admitted the commission of the offence. Therefore, it is clear that the prosecution has proved the case beyond reasonable doubt. The magistrate said Edwin is found guilty and convicted for the offence under sections 287 and 336 IPC.

The judge sentenced him to undergo simple imprisonment for a week and imposed a fine of Rs 750 on him.
