Kerala: Police to start drive against illegal horns

Number of vehicles fitted with horns producing scary noises on increase.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The police will be launching a drive against the use of illegal horns and overspeeding by vehicles. State police chief Loknath Behera directed the police officials to take stringent action against vehicles using horns that were illegal, in the wake of reports of widespread violations. As per norms, the sound of horns should be around 80 decibels. Also, horns approved by Bureau of Indian Standards should only be used.

IG Thiruvananthapuram-range Manoj Abraham, who is also holding charge of IG Traffic, said the police would be mainly booking vehicles fitted with extra horns. Also, sound level meters to check horns are available in some districts. Police sources said vehicles fitted with horns producing scary noises were also becoming rampant.

The penalty for using illegal horns could be in the range of Rs 100 to Rs 500. Meanwhile, motor vehicles department sources said they were already taking action against vehicles using illegal horns. "We are carrying out checking of 25 parameters, including the use of illegal horns. A fine of Rs 500 would be imposed on the violators," an officer said.
