Ramaswami Aiyar remembered for women welfare

The week long celebrations also included a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar Foundation.

Chennai: Eminent lawyer C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar has widely contributed towards women welfare when he was a member of the erstwhile Madras corporation, said historian V. Shriram while delivering a lecture as part of the Madras Week
celebrations on Saturday.

The week long celebrations also included a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar Foundation. Recollecting the efforts of the lawyer, Shriram spoke about how Aiyar helped to publish “The New India and Common Weal — the journals of Annie Besant.”

“When Anni Besant was jailed, Aiyar edited the articles under a tree as the British passed orders to seize any building which facilitate publishing,” he said.

The historian has also brought the C. P. period alive by narrating the verses from Shakuntala Jagannathan's book - C.P Remembered. Professor and head of History Centre, C.P.R Research Foundation, G.J. Sudhakar thanked Shriram for an objective lecture.
