Madurai: 25 teams formed to trace missing man

Who was alleged to have been under the illegal custody of a few politically influential persons from Feb 1.

Madurai: Theni SP, J. Mahesh told the court that they have formed 25 special teams to search for a person who was alleged to have been under the illegal custody of a few politically influential persons from Feb 1.

Following the court direction, SP Mahesh appeared in person before the division bench comprising Justices K.K. Sasidharan and B. Gokuldas on Wednesday.

When the judges asked about the progress of the investigation on a habeas corpus petition, which charged that police are not taking appropriate steps to trace Kalaivanan, the SP told the court that 25 special police teams have been on the job. “Recently a team had also visited Cuddalore in search of him,” said the SP.

However counsel appearing for the petitioner K. Mahapriya, wife of the missing person, countered the SP’s arguments claiming that the police are not listening to their inputs in the case.

When the SP requested the court to provide them some more time to trace Kalaivanan, the judges asked the police to complete the investigation before August 11 and also asked the petitioner to file their complaints in a separate affidavit.

Mahapriya had filed a habeas corpus petition claiming that two respondents named Vicky and Thangaprakash had caused physical injuries on her husband Kalaivanan, (33), before they detained in illegal custody. She also alleged the involvement of political persons in this case.
