Two held for stealing Kochi Metro work materials

The family had taken a loan Rs 1 lakh for marrying off their daughter and the duo committed the looting to pay off the debt.

Kochi: Two persons, including a woman, were arrested on Monday for allegedly stealing metro construction materials at Thykoodam here. The accused were identified as Andhra native Nagamma (52) and her son-in-law Gopal (29). According to cops, Nagamma and her family were residing at Kuthappadi near Thammanam for nearly 10 years. The family had taken a loan of nearly Rs 1 lakh for marrying off their elder daughter and the duo committed the looting to pay off the debt.

“The duo arrived at the construction site at Thykoodam at 4.45 am on Sunday in a three-wheeler. They stole nearly 90 shutter sheets and fled from the scene. However, two sheets fell on the road near Vytilla Hub. They hid it in a bush to take it away later. The duo came again at 8.30 pm and took it out ,” police said.

However, cops stopped and inspected their vehicles while on way to sell off the materials upon suspicion. Tammanam native Anaz who bought the stuff knowing they were stolen has disappeared following the arrest.
