Bid to sanction new courses in Mahatma Gandhi University

The three colleges have applied for BCom, BCA, MSc Zoology, BSc Psychology, MCom and MSc Botany.

KOCHI: Flouting the directive of the government nominees in the MG University Syndicate which was accepted as the decision of the latest Syndicate meeting on June 16, inspection committees headed by Syndicate members are now visiting aided/self-financing colleges under the varsity to sanction new courses to these colleges.

DC is in possession of a copy of the order dated last June 9 issued by the MGU Academic A1 Section to three colleges namely SNM College Maliankara, St George’s College Aruvithura and St Xavier’s College Aluva in this regard. It is understood that there are more colleges in the list.

The order directs the principals of the colleges to contact the members of the inspection committee to fix the date of inspection and remit Rs 1,500 per member towards fee for inspection and Rs 2,500 towards late fee. The normal MGU practice is that the inspection is conducted and new courses and colleges are recommended for government NOC by May 31 before the commencement of next academic year.

The application for the same has to be submitted by the colleges before previous year (2015) August 15, as per the order issued to the colleges. “The university is collecting lakhs of rupees from colleges by way of late fee of Rs 2,500 per course by accepting late applications after August. The inspection at this hour is not at all justified and the colleges are given false notions regarding its legitimacy,” said a Syndicate member who is not part of the inspection teams.

The three colleges have applied for BCom, BCA, MSc Zoology, BSc Psychology, MCom and MSc Botany. The UGC never gives role for Syndicate members in inspection teams, but this is violated by MGU. The Vice-Chancellor had earlier kept these three applications in abeyance due to some defects. The order says that the VC has accorded sanction for the inspection committee after the colleges cleared the defects.

The inspection commissions are to submit the reports to the university registrar. The government nominees in the Syndicate had blocked the move to sanction new colleges and courses in the last Syndicate meeting. It is also learnt that certain colleges have approached High Court to get sanction for new courses.
