Ruckus in Thrissur corporation council meet over Master Plan

While mayor wanted general discussion put aside, opposition demanded talks on water shortage.

Thrissur: There was a ruckus in the Thrissur Corporation meeting over including a discussion on the Master Plan for Thrissur town in the agenda on Friday. There were a total of 92 items in the agenda, but citing lack of time, Mayor Ajitha Jayarajan announced in the council during the general discussion that other items needed to be kept aside to discuss the agenda. Opposition members of the UDF said that their leader M.K. Mukundan was not allowed to raise issues regarding shortage of potable water in different wards in the civic body and issues regarding delay in distribution of welfare pensions among others.

Citing this, the opposition members disrupted council proceedings and the ruling LDF councilors also stormed into the well demanding a debate on the master plan. As the pandemonium continued in the council, the Mayor adjourned the meeting. Later, both the opposition and the Mayor called a joint press-conference to explain their views. The Mayor said that after the LDF council came to power, a meeting was summoned at Joy's Palace in June 2016 where experts discussed the Master Plan in Thrissur which had been kept on the backburner for decades now. “The opposition had then demanded an opportunity to discuss the plan as only experts spoke in the meeting. But now, in the council, the opposition members deliberately waylaid the move to discuss and adopt the master plan which is of prime importance for the development of the town,” Mrs Jayarajan said.
