Aralam egg,' from Kannur a hit market

The eggs are being collected, quality assured and ready for sale under the brand Aralam egg.

KANNUR: Aralam, the picturesque forest fenced village in Kannur, has something to offer other than its splendid beauty. It has given to the world ‘Aralam egg’ which has come into the market, though in a small manner, under the joint project of the Aralam gram panchayat (GP), Animal husbandry department and Kudumbasree. The hens from the Animal husbandry department’s farm at Mundayad are being supplied to Kudumbasree members and they groom the birds to lay eggs. The eggs are being collected, quality assured and ready for sale under the brand Aralam egg. The first sales counter of the eggs began in Edoor of the grama panchayat on Wednesday. “ Rs 45 is the rate charged per packet containing six eggs,” says Aralam GP president Shiji Naduparambil.

Last year, the GP had given 16,000 hens to 100 Kudumbasree units for the project. Another 6,000 birds are ready for supply. “Each Kudumbashree member will get a procurement price of Rs 5.50 per egg. After the infant stage, the branded egg would be made available outside the district,” says district animal husbandry officer C. K. Khaleel. The department had allocated Rs 5 lakh for the project. 'Gramashree' breed of hens are being supplied from the farm. The hens are being feed with organic food only.
