MK Stalin welcomes Supreme Court verdict to release water

He said the expert panel had given importance to the report of Karnataka which had failed to comply with the Supreme Court order.

Chennai: Welcoming the Supreme Court verdict asking Karnataka to release 2,000 cubic feet of water to Tamil Nadu, leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin on Tuesday said the subsequent judgments by the apex court is a great consolation for Tamil Nadu farmers.

Though, 2,000 cubic feet is not enough for samba cultivation, the judgment showed that the Supreme Court had realised the fairness of TN farmers' demand. However, he also flayed the technical expert panel headed by G.S. Jha for failing to put forward the Tamil Nadu farmers' just demands. The report had only repeated the reports given by Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Stalin said.

He said the expert panel had given importance to the report of Karnataka which had failed to comply with the Supreme Court order. It had cited the suicides of Karnataka farmers, but did not bring out the plight of Tamil Nadu farmers, he said.

Stalin also said farmers in the delta region too had committed suicides and the state government had concealed the details to the expert team. He appealed to the centre to form the CMB.
