Police crackdown on Tanur attackers to end clashes

The repeated clashes between Muslim League and CPM men during the past few months have worried the police.

MALAPPURAM: The Tanur police have decided to put an end to the recurring political clashes in many parts of the coastal area. They will issue lookout notices to thwart the attempts of the accused to go abroad to evade legal action. The repeated clashes between Muslim League and CPM men during the past few months have worried the police. “The police have been facing resistance from local residents in many areas and the attempts to arrest the accused were unsuccessful,” said Sumesh Sudhakaran, SI of Tanur.

A police team led by Mr Sumesh was attacked by local gangs last week while trying to arrest an accused in a case registered in connection with a political clash at Chapappadi. Mr Sumesh and two civil police officers had sustained injuries in stone pelting. The clashes which started two months before the Assembly elections have not stopped yet.

“There are many incidents in which the accused have gone abroad to evade police action. Measures are underway to foil such attempts and the culprits will be brought to justice,” the SI said. Circle Inspector P.R. Bejoy said that some groups were utilising the local residents in coastal areas in the name of minor issues.
