Rain-soaked slopes prone to landslips in Ooty

Residents here want some extra precautionary measures such as identifying landslip prone areas on that road to guide students for safe commuting.

Ooty: A landslip in this hill centre damaged a couple of vehicles. While Upper Bhavani near here recorded 165 mm of rains on Tuesday with Avalanchee near here accounting for 161 mm of rainfall, gusty winds continued to play havoc with power and water supply in the hills.

Though the catchment areas continued to receive good rainfall on Monday night, there was some relief for the town limits as the intensity of the rainfall has come down considerably since Tuesday morning. But the rain soaked slopes have turned fragile as was evidenced by the landslip in the St. Mary's hill area here that saw a huge mass of soil and stones come down and damage a couple of vehicles parked along the Woodcock road there on Monday night.

While minor landslips are common either during heavy rains or after the rains, the landslip in the St. Mary's hill area, which is a zone of schools, sent shock waves to residents here as hundreds of students commute on that road to reach their schools. Residents here want some extra precautionary measures such as identifying landslip prone areas on that road to guide students for safe commuting. This apart, the gusty winds that is blowing across the hills, is still uprooting trees and electric poles, adding to the snapping of power lines that in turn, has crippled water supply.
