Caste slur U-turn, 2 sisters held in Kannur

Earlier, three CPM workers were arrested for attacking these sisters.

Kannur: Two Dalit sisters were arrested and remanded to custody on Friday in Kannur based on the complaints of CPM workers that they attacked them at their party office. They were remanded along with the one-and-a-half-year old daughter of the elder sister who was taken to the women’s cell of the Kannur central prison.

However, the police claimed that the sisters surrendered before the police, fearing attack from the CPM workers. On Friday, Akhila, 30, and Anjuna, 25, daughters of Congress worker N. Rajan, were called to Thalassery police station under the pretext of taking their statement in the case they filed against CPM workers for abusing them. Their family said that the sisters were called by caste name and attacked physically.

However, the police said they were involved in a non-bailable crime for attacking CPM workers after entering their party office. According to the case, the sisters from Kuttimakkool, attacked DYFI Thiruvangad East village Committee joint secretary Shijil, and he was injured. However, Rajan’s family says that Akhila and Anjuna were called to the police station and they were taken to Kannur Second Class Magistrate court and from there directly taken to the women’s cell, Central Prison, denying bail, along with Akhila’s daughter Advika.

“It seems that the Dalits do not have a life here. Is it because that the Chief Minister belongs to this district and he wants to silence each and every voice that is raised against his party? My sisters were denied bail on what account? Just because we are Dalits or that our father belong another political party? We are the victims, not accused. When we file complaint against somebody for abusing us by calling caste names and attacking us, how can the police arrest us?” asks

Mr Rajan’s youngest daughter Ajisha. Congress workers took out a protest march to Thalassery police station, led by KPCC president V.M. Sudheeran. Earlier, three CPM workers were arrested for attacking these sisters.
