Telangana government permits shops to run all 7 days for next 3 years

The move is aimed as part of government's policy to “ease doing business†and increase business activity.

Hyderabad: Telangana government has allowed shops and other establishments to stay open all seven days a week throughout the year for three more years.
Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao directed labour department to extend this exemption till June 2019.

Last June, the Telangana government issued a notification to this effect for a period of one year, which expired on June 14. The move is aimed as part of government’s policy to “ease doing business” and increase business activity.

Mr Rao reviewed how the exemption benefitted the state, shops and people, with officials of labour department on Thursday. He said it helped increase business activity across the state and made shopping more convenient for people.

The orders issued by the principal secretary of labour department, Ahmad Nadeem, stated that the shops have to fulfill certain conditions to avail this exemption. The working hours of the employees shall be 8 hours per day and 48 hours in a week.

Each employee will be allowed to avail a weekly holiday on rotation basis.
Working hours of the shop shall be between 9 am and 11 pm. In case of women employees required to work beyond 8.30 pm, transport arrangements should be made.

All employees are to be provided with appointment letters and copy of the same should be furnished to the jurisdiction inspector and acknowledgement shall be preserved in the shop for inspection at any time.

The employer shall cooperate in implementing the “duties of inspection” under rule 28 of the Telangana Shops & Establishments Rules, 1990 especially with regard to the implementation of the conditions and also the provisions of other labour laws for the workers employed.
