Supreme Court stays admission bar on Karuna Medical College

Moreover, the committee also decided to regulate the annual tuition fees of Karuna Medical College.

Thiruvananthapuram: The state government suffered a minor setback as the Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the decision of the Admission Supervisory Committee headed by Justice J.M. James not to sanction 31 admissions made in Karuna Medical College violating norms. The court has directed the government to maintain status quo till the court examines the validity of the decision. Mr Kapil Sibal, who represented the college, said that the government was taking revenge against Karuna and Kannur medical colleges which stayed away from an agreement on admissions and fee structure.

Karuna Medical College has a sanctioned intake of 100 seats. As per the prospectus, there are 17 seats in general merit, 33 for SEBC/SC/ST/Muslims and 35 under management quota and 15 percent under NRI quota. The committee had revised the admissions made by Karuna Medical College ensuring the inter se merit of the candidates after retaining the admissions of 30 candidates made by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) during the spot admission held on October 7. Moreover, the committee also decided to regulate the annual tuition fees of Karuna Medical College. It had also set aside the entire admission of 150 candidates by the Kannur Medical College for deliberately violating the orders of the committee and the court.
