Guntur: Laxmi sent to judicial custody

The other five persons arrested along with Prof Laxmi were granted bail by the court.

GUNTUR: Professor V.A.A. Laxmi, who has been accused of harassment of the post-graduate medical student, B. Sandya Rani, who committed suicide, was sent to two weeks’ judicial custody by Guntur third additional sessions court on Tuesday. The other five persons arrested along with Prof Laxmi were granted bail by the court.

Prof Laxmi was arrested in Bengaluru on Monday. Guntur range inspector general, N. Sanjay, produced the six accused before the media. He said Prof. Laxmi was traced to 16 locations from October 24 and finally arrested in Bengaluru. He said eight police teams worked on tracking her and her family.

He said the other five arrested had helped her to escape. They were Prof. Laxmi’s husband Dr Vijayasaradhi, her son Bhargava Kir-an, Yalavarti Danvan-tarao, Tella Haribabu and Tamarti Praveen Kumar.

The inspector said that the currency demonetisation had helped the police trace the location of the professor. She ran out of money and used her ATM card. She also made phone calls from a coin box.

Prof. Laxmi has pleaded her innocence and said she had nothing to do with the suicide of her student Sandya Rani. She said Sandya Rani didn’t want to study gynaecology but her husband forced her to join the course. “On the advice of a few people I ran away in the hope of getting bail,” she said.
